4F Questions: Prescott Farm

1.Why did they move it from place to place?

Because it was very expensive to build one so they just moved it.

2.How did they rebuild the mill?

They put numbers on pieces and put it together like a puzzle.

3.How do you grind corn?

They start by putting the corn down a chute. The grindstone grinds the corn.

4.How do you keep the millstones sharp? They have sharpening tools.

5.What kind of corn do you use? Flint corn

6.How long do have to dry the corn before you grind it? Six to nine months.

7.How did you move the mill? They cut it into big boards and they took it in a big truck.

8.What did the wagon on Prescott Farm carry? It carried corn from the farm to the mill.

9.How much wind does the windmill need to grind? 15-20 knots.

10.How long did it take you to rebuild the mill? 3 years

11.How much of the original mill is there? About three quarters of the mill is original.

12.How do you pick a spot to put a windmill? You put it on the highest spot you can get.

13.Why are the windows in different spots since you rebuilt the mill? Because they thought they would go better in these spots when they rebuilt it.

14.Are you going to make corn meal again? They are going to do some more work on the mill. Maybe they can grind again in a few years.

15.What kinds of wood are in the mill? Oak, pine, chestnut, ash.

16.How high and how heavy is the windmill? The windmill is over 40 feet high and over 12 tons.

17.When did you move the mill? 1969.

18. How old are the buildings at Prescott Farm and where did you get them. Overing House has 1730. Another building is from 1720.
