Rhode Island Nursery Questions: Mr. Vanicek

Do you ever cover your plants to protect them? They use shades over the beds of small plants. They use a greenhouse in the winter.

Can weather be a problem? Yes, weather is a big problem. There is no perfect weather for a farmer.

Do you move the mules to different fields? Yes.

What is the history of your farm? His great grandfather came from Czechoslovakia. He went back and forth to get plants for the mansions. Now they sell their own plants as far as the Midwest.

What machines do you use? John Deere digger, cultivator, plows, irrigation pumps.

What do you do with unsuccessful plants? They put them in the compost.

Do you like your job? Yes. His job always changes. He started farming in 1986.

What trees do you grow? Cherry, willow, crabapples.

What are your best selling plants? Yews – his grandfather found them first.

Where do you keep the mules at night? The mules are put in a barn.

Do you have any animals other than mules? No

How old are your mules? Do they have names? 4-6 years old. They do have names. (Like Rock and Roll)
