4B Questions: Manic Organic

For Farmer Nicole

Can farming be boring? No, there is always something fun to do.

How big is your farm? 18 acres

Do you have any helpers? Yes, mostly young women who want to farm.

What do you grow? Mainly vegetables. Lettuce, raspberries, tomatoes.

What is your best selling crop? Lettuce.

Do you use machines? Yes, plows, roto-tillers. Tractors and mowers.

Do you have farm animals? No, but she does get manure from farmers who do have animals.

What are the enemies of your plants? Deer, flea beetles, and weeds.

What is your favorite thing to grow? Zebra tomatoes and purple broccoli.

Do seasons affect your business? Yes. Weather makes a difference. She can do some things in the new barn over the winter.

How do you keep the farm nice? She uses six types of cover crops like buckwheat and oats. She rotates areas where she plants and keeps records of them. She uses nearby water to irrigate. She uses compost and manure to help the soil.

Why did you want to become a farmer? She became a farmer because it’s healthy and fun and good to work outside.

What are your biggest problems? Rocks and weeds.

How long have you been farming organically. 5 years.

Why don’t you use chemicals? Organic farmers don’t use chemicals. They use natural enemies to get rid of pests. They use cover crops for the soil and manure and compost.

Do you eat what you make? Yes, Nicole loves her crops.

How long has your family been farming? Since 1688. Mary has been farming all of her life.

How big was your farm? 40 acres.

Did you have farm animals? They had chickens and turkeys.
